Essential Beer Kegerator Accessories – The Big List

Everybody knows that beer – the chilling of, the serving of and the serving of again and … make that ‘again’ – is THE most important component of a successful tailgate party.  Oh, along with bacon flavored food but that’s another story which we address elsewhere.

Back to the beer and not a moment too soon. The investment in a fine kegerator will save you money.  Bulk liquid is better than any investment in a pile of waste – beer bottles and cans which end up in the trash can.

Here’s a list of the essential beer kegerator accessories for those who have invested in a kegerator or want to convert your fridge to one. This is how you will get the most out of your useful gadgets. I figured it just may be helpful for you to have this list here all together as it will save you searching for them.  When last I looked, there was no ‘Kegerators Are Us’ chain of stores so please regard this as your personal shopping list and resource which I will update over the months.  The actual usage of individual items will depend on your initial purchase, and the list is in no particular order of priority.  Again, this depends on your own needs.

HINT: If you are purchasing items which may need replacing on a regular basis, buy multiples up front and avoid costly shipping costs.

HINT: Keep a file of assembly instruction books, company contacts for service.

1. Kegco Ultimate Door Mount Kegerator 2 Tap Conversion Kit w/ 5 lbs Tank – EBUCK2-5T

Kegco Ultimate Door Mount Kegerator 2 Tap Conversion Kit w/ 5 lbs Tank - EBUCK2-5T

Kegco Ultimate Door Mount Kegerator 2 Tap Conversion Kit

This is what is says: ULTIMATE!  Every part you require for creating your own kegerator is in this awesome kit.  Even stainless steel drip trays for that professional bar feel.  If you have a small generator, a trailer hitch or you drive a Silverado, you can transport your mega-kego to the parking lot and your friends will gather round like yellow-jacket wasps to an open can of Sprite. Attach all this stuff to a small refrigerator (and these are so cheap at the moment) and your beer serving skills will be ramped up to Pro level.  What’s not to love about a continuous supply of draft beer?  You might never make it into the stadium, but hey, tailgating isn ‘t really about the game, and with a TV hooked up to the generator, a couple of comfy chairs and food that contains bacon, all’s right with the world.  Kegco is numero uno in the keg design and building field so you can bet on good after sales service and advice.  Full installation instructions are included so all you have to supply is the BEER and getting that tailgate party happening!

2. Clamp for Regular Auto-Siphon

CLAMP for Regular Auto-Siphon

CLAMP for Regular Auto-Siphon

This clip or clamp attaches to a fermenting bucket or carboy to hold a regular Auto-Siphon in place. If you are a home-brewer, you will definitely need this.  It will suit a specific size of auto siphon so when you get to this site, be sure you select the one that gives the most accurate, air-free result.  If air escapes from the tubing because of a loose fit, you won’t get that siphon happening so check this from the supplier before finalizing your payment and order. See later note on Keg Lube.  It may be all you need for a tight seal.

3. Ball Lock Becker Home Brew Keg Tap MFL Coupler Set

Ball Lock Becker Home Brew Keg Tap MFL Coupler Set

Ball Lock Becker Home Brew Keg Tap MFL Coupler Set

NOTE: Cornelius (‘Corny’) kegs come in two different styles, one being the pin lock the other is a ball lock. The terms ‘pin lock’ and ‘ball lock’ both refer to the way the quick disconnects attach to the Cornelius keg. Here’s a video that explains the difference.

Kegs can be used for home-brew or you can fill them with draft beer or soda. It’s up to you.

This set is not the most upmarket in the range but has all the parts you need to ensure an airtight fit.  It features a ball lock system, gas in and out and beer out.

Beer out connection features 1/4″ MFL fitting with 1/4″ Flare Fitting to fit 3/16″ ID Beer Line.

Gas in connection features 1/4″ MFL filling with 5/16″ Flare Fitting to fit 5/16″ ID Air Line. The ¼” MFL fittings allow you to remove your gas/beer lines from the coupler connector easily.

HINT: Be sure that you do not rush the installation and avoid cross-threading screw parts.

Following is a list of bits and bobs you may require over the years. Where appropriate I will make a note, but in general, take them at face value and do your research as to the exact sizes and specifications of the kegerator you use. Things to watch are interior and exterior hose sizes.

4. Pair Ball Lock Disconnects for Corny Kegs 3 Gas 3 Liquid

Again, be careful when you do the connection. These are not heavy duty (made in China) but cheap and OK for those of us who take the care not to cross thread or force the linkage. Some units may require a gasket to prevent any gas leakage.  This seems to be a matter of trial and error somewhat.  It’s a good idea to have a universal gasket collection on hand just in case.

5. Ball Style Quick Disconnect – Gas

Ball Style Quick Disconnect - Gas

Ball Style Quick Disconnect – Gas

Ball Style Quick Disconnects are used for most Cornelius, (Corny) Pepsi and 7-UP tanks and simply slide over the nipple and connect with a clamp over the hose (just like installing the home sprinkler system.  Note to self: must finish that one day. Very easy assembly.  This is the Gas end.

6. Ball Style Quick Disconnect – Liquid

Ball Lock Quick Disconnect

Ball Lock Quick Disconnect

Alternative to the above: here is the liquid end and is compatible with Pepsi kegs as well as those tailgate party staples of beer kegs in various formats. Your beer and air line simply slide over the nipple, then use a screw clamp to tighten around the hose. This one is used for liquid. In stock and ready to ship. Features: Ball style. Used for liquid. Specs: Barb outlet fits 3/16″ inside diameter draft hose.

7. B3-23A 20 Plate Beer Wort Chiller Garden Hose x 1/2″ Male NPT

B3-23A 20 Plate Beer Wort Chiller Garden Hose x 1/2" Male NPT

B3-23A 20 Plate Beer Wort Chiller Garden Hose x 1/2″ Male NPT

For home brew kegs:

NOTE

Wort is the sweet infusion of ground malt or other grain before fermentation, used to produce beer and distilled malt liquors.

Wort Chillers are an essential beer-making tool used to cool boiling wort down to a temperature at which you can safely add beer yeast, around 60-80F. However, once the cooling wort reaches temperatures of 130F and cooler there are some bacteria and wild yeast that can survive.

While this equipment relates to home-brew it can equally relate to chilling your keg brew superfast and keeping it bacteria free.

The chiller connects to garden hose width of tubing and runs with a recommended Max Water Flow Rate of eight gallons per minute designed to be effective at a temperature -195°C to +220°C (-319°F to 430°F).  This is a pretty essential stage of the brewing process so for those of you whose keg only ever will contain your own brand of ‘Panther Piss’ look no further as this is the cream of the crop.

8. Shank for Draft Beer System: 3-inch

Shank for Draft Beer System

Shank for Draft Beer System

NOTE:

You use the steel shank to connect your draft beer faucet to the beer line jumper.  It is required when using a kegerator refrigerator conversion kit. Depending on the height, you may need a longer shank.  These are easily available from 3 inches to 14 inches.  Diameter is 7/8 inch. (Outside measurement). Just follow the links.

This model is chromed brass and made to a budget but is very satisfactory.  If you are looking to go upmarket or it is for professional use, choose stainless steel instead.

Again, follow the seller links to your exact size.  Kegerator accessory rule: Measure three times and order once!

9. Draft Warehouse Clear 5-Feet of 3/16-Inch Id Beer Line with Hexnut Assembly On One End

Draft Warehouse Clear 5-Feet of 3/16-Inch Id Beer Line

Draft Warehouse Clear 5-Feet of 3/16-Inch Id Beer Line

NOTE: Up to you but, in time, lines do need to be kept hygienic and my preference is to have a few of these standard sized assemblies on hand and switch them out.  Dirty hoses will make the beer foam too much. Hoses are just way too difficult to sterilize. Alternatively, you can soak them in baby bottle sterilizer mix but that has its risks and you need to rinse and rinse till the inside of the hose is 100% inert. So when they get gunky, it’s time to biff them out and replace.

Comes standard with 5′ of 3/16″ clear beer tubing and Includes all components required to make a neer or air line connection: ie. hex nut, washer ,tail piece and 5 feet of hose.  Be sure to check the sizes of your lines and match with these exactly.  If in doubt, fire of a question to the supplier.  I have even sent pics from my iPhone.  You just don’t want to get it wrong.

10. Portable Keg Dispensing System – W/co2 Charger & 3 Cartridges, Picnic Tap, Pin Lock

Portable Keg Dispensing System

Portable Keg Dispensing System

Here is a neat kit that contains all you need to get that beer-a-chilling and on the way to the tailgate party.

Contents are:

Corny CO2 Charger

3 Co2 16g Premium Cartridges

Pin Lock connections (note that on the picture it shows ball lock connectors but these are now not made for this kit).

Squeeze Faucet Picnic Tap (AKA Tailgate Party Tap!)

NOTE: A 5 gallon keg may need 2 cartridges depending on the beverage so maybe buy some spares.

You can also buy the components separately.

10. Kegco O-Ring Gasket Set for Cornelius Home Brew Keg

Gaskets are something I like to keep on hand so check these out – they will be invaluable to prevent gas or liquid leaks.

12. Cornelius Keg CO2 Charger

Cornelius Keg CO2 Charger

Cornelius Keg CO2 Charger

Having a few of these as a backup is supposed to be a good idea.  They are not expensive and it’s better than being caught with your pants down (metaphorically) … though you can be caught like that at some tailgate parties so they tell me.  It is small – pocket sized, made of high quality nylon and brass but doesn’t really review well.  It is no substitute for a regulator and the latter is a better investment.  However, it is handy for portability especially in a parking lot where tailgate parties need to be transported as light as possible.  You need a few of these (suggest 2 – 5) to pump 5 gallons of beer perfectly.

A suggestion is to use the Keg Lube to create a tight seal.

13. Keg Lube

Keg Lube

Keg Lube

This lubricates gaskets and ensures a tight seal, no leaks!  It is food grade as long as you replace the lid and also use with a Q-tip rather than your finger.  It is essential to keep a keg clean!

Note that a lot of criticisms of taps, cartridges and hoses relates to the leakiness.  Keg Lube, super cheap, is your best tool against the frustration of leaks and shonky seals.

14. Draft Warehouse Beer Faucet and 4 inch Shank Kit with Black Handle

Draft Warehouse Beer Faucet and 4-Inch Shank Kit with Black Handle

Draft Warehouse Beer Faucet and 4-Inch Shank Kit with Black Handle

The interesting thing about this is that people seem to use them to adapt all kinds of things to contain drinks.  Watermelons, Pumpkins, refrigerators, exercise balls … if you’ve done that, please send us the pictures!

Anyway, this is the part that gives you the ability to tap whatever liquid you put in there. Pumpkin beer ….yummmm.  Nah. Not so much.

Chrome plated brass keeps the costs more realistic. Stainless steel is better if you are able to afford it and if you will be really using this heaps.

However, a cheaper version is a pretty acceptable rig for tailgate party dudes.

NOTE:

I know I hammer this a lot but keep it clean!  Spray off all the beer before going home.  When you get home, take it apart and soak briefly in a food grade bleach solution (1/2 teaspoon to quart of water). Rinse and air dry. Bar quality.

15. The Carbonater

http://www.amazon.com/LiquidBread-The-Carbonater/dp/B0064OKADS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1394173317&sr=8-1&keywords=the+carbonator

This handy device is a kind of screw cap for standard plastic soda bottles that allows you to enjoy fresh draft homebrew anywhere. All you do is fill a plastic 2-liter soda bottle with beer and put the Carbonator cap on. Squeeze out the excess air and inject CO2 into the bottle to keep your beer carbonated and fresh. May also be used to force carbonate any beverage.  You need a few accessories for the process:  The carbonater needs to be connected to a tube with a snap fitting (easily available online) and then connect this to a CO2 regulator which is then connected to a C02 tank from your kegerator.

16. Keg Conversion Kit for Refrigerator (Convert a Standard Refrigerator to a Kegerator)

Keg Conversion Kit for Refrigerator (Convert a Standard Refrigerator to a Kegerator)

Keg Conversion Kit for Refrigerator (Convert a Standard Refrigerator to a Kegerator)

So you’ve picked up a neat little refrigerator from the hard trash collection by the kerb.  Yaaaaaay.  Here’s a great kit that can convert it into a kegerator.  It would be great for that basement fridge as you set up the man-cave and plan the home-gate party when the weather is too inclement for tailgating.

This kit easily converts an old refrigerator to a home draft beer dispenser and includes all the hardware you need to be pouring cold draft beer anytime you feel the need. Your friends will suddenly want to come around and see you. Full instructions are included for quick and easy installation.  Parts included with kit: 5 feet of beer line with hex nuts, complete beer shank, chrome faucet, Black faucet knob, 5 feet of air line with clamps, double gauge CO2 regulator, faucet brush, faucet wrench, and an American Sankey keg coupler (commonly referred to as the tap).  Add to this a pot of keg lube (see above) and you’ll be cooking with gas.  No, my mistake, dispensing perfect beer with gas.

18. Double Tap Stainless Steel Draft Beer Kegerator Tower – 3″ Diameter

Double Tap Stainless Steel Draft Beer Kegerator Tower - 3" Diameter

Double Tap Stainless Steel Draft Beer Kegerator Tower

This is a stainless steel double tap vertical tower for dispensing draft beer.  You can play barman at the tailgate party in a very professional way dispensing beers from this amazing system.  The taps are chrome plated brass, the tower Stainless Steel and it all looks very pro standing 12 inches plus the height of the taps. Having two lines gives you the freedom to serve two styles of beer.  A nice dark Léon from Mexico and a sweet, pale beer from say, Minnesota, Summit Extra Pale Ale. Think about personalizing your taps by adding team themed ones and putting the plain ones on eBay…. Take it on the road if you have access to power or install it in the man cave.

NOTE: There are many beer towers of different standards and specifications available.

10 Best Beer Bongs For The Tailgate Party Reviewed

Everyone knows that beer bongs are an essential part of the tailgate party experience, mainly because the activities in the parking lot take place in a small window for fun. Then you have to leave your beer, bbq and games and go sit in the stadium.  So you need to get a sinful skinful and get buzzed faster than the normal rate of sipping from a Solo cup. Here’s a list of the best beer bongs out there – sure you could use any old funnel and tube but who knows where that’s been? And what’s the fun of that when you could potentially be drinking out of a spine!

The golden rule with all these items is to make sure you clean and dry them before use.  If it really worries you, run some vodka through as that really sterilizes those hard-to-reach places.

You need to look at the capacity (anything bigger than you can drink will be wasted), the length of the tubes and whether it has a tap or not.

Here are the few ways to jazz up what is essentially a siphon, a funnel and a tube.  My favorite is obviously the 6-seater arrangement around the pole, but each item on this list has merit either for its low price or functions.

Barbuzzo Russian Roulette Beer Bong

Barbuzzo Russian Roulette Beer Bong

Barbuzzo Russian Roulette Beer Bong

Great idea but leaks and doesn’t siphon properly plus breaks easily.  The barrel/funnel part never really opens wide enough to get a good flow. Holds up to 72 ounces of fluid.

Cute though and cheap enough if you buy it with other items so that you get free shipping.

Skull Beverage Funnel

Skull Beer Funnel

Skull Beer Funnel

Finish him! If you’re into cold beers and Sub-Zero is your Mortal Combat hero then this beer bong is for you! With this bad boy you can skål a Skol in a skull! Beer goes in the head and down the spine-tube so technically the beer bong can double as a Halloween party item.  Make sure to wash it well before and after use and air dry it before stashing it in your tailgate party kit.  Get a buddy to help you fill it then let the fun commence!

Pink Flamingo Bird Beer Bong

Pink Flamingo Bird Beer Bong

Pink Flamingo Bird Beer Bong

It’s never a bad thing to cater specifically for the lady-drinkers on your team.  This is certainly a girly item and performs a lot slower than most manly beer bongs.  As a novelty item to bring out at your tailgate party, it says fun for the girls and that makes it worth a spot in your tailgate party kit.  You chug from the bird’s beak with the bottle attached underneath. Very simple.

The Double Header – Funnel and Tube Beer Bong

The Double Header

The Double Header

The Double Header has twin 2 foot hoses with taps so you and your best (or worst) bud can race to a stupor.  Have another friend top it up and another clean up the spill.  A hint is to put plumbers’ tape (Teflon) on all the joins to avoid spilling a drop of that precious amber ale.  It’s not a high-priced item and so it isn’t built like code plumbing, but is a fun thing and does the job.  Nice to be able to turn your favorite activity into a legitimate contest.

Extreme Beer Bong

Extreme Beer Bong

Extreme Beer Bong

Similar to the basic funnel/hose/valve (tap)  combo, this version has a 6 foot hose and works well.  The hose is somewhat narrower and you may find a build-up of foam but hey, just keep sucking hard and fast and that will calm down.

Very inexpensive so you can throw a few of these in your tailgate party kit.  Wash and dry well prior and after use and if it develops any leaks at joins, apply the Teflon tape as discussed above.

Bongzilla Beer Bong with 6 Tubes

Bongzilla Beer Bong with 6 Tubes

Bongzilla Beer Bong with 6 Tubes

OK, this one is almost unbeatable for a fun party-starter.  It’s pole mounted on a sturdy base which, when filled with water, keeps it all anchored to the ground.  Best of all, it allows six people to slam down the beer simultaneously and darn fast.  From the Head Rush Beer Bong ultimate party people, it features a six-way funnel, six hoses and six valves.  The pole is adjustable so you can either sit or stand.  I guess most start standing, gradually sliding into a seat and maybe eventually playing at floor level.  Just keep adjusting the pole closer to the ground.  You can plug any tube that is not being used with one of the supplied stoppers.  Capacity is 12 cans of beer or half a gallon (5 or six beers), so keep those growlers happening and get a friend to top it up as I know my friends will drink more than the starter funnel full.

Head Rush 1 Hose 18ft Balcony Beer Bong with On / Off Valve

Head Rush 18ft Balcony Beer Bong

Head Rush 18ft Balcony Beer Bong

I’m including this as I know there are some who have their tailgate parties near balconies, roof-gardens, home-gating in some cases.  Naturally, it is a ‘must-pack’ for your trip to Cancun and Cabo, but idea for some situations where the beer can flow fast from a height of 18 feet.  Yes, that is what it says.  18 glorious gravitational feet causing the beer to flow so fast that your alimentary canal will be challenged in the best way possible.  Do I need to explain more?  It has the Head Rush Beer Bong quality and good design and will give you hours of fun.  Not that you will remember much of it till the hilarious photos are featured on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Beer Bottle Bong (Head Rush)

Beer Bottle Bong

Beer Bottle Bong

If your beers come in bottles, then this is for you.  It can pump the beer from the bottle in seconds without loss of quality.  Suck it in fast!  The gadget fits over the bottle and the tube goes in the bottle and the small part of the tube (of course) goes into your mouth.  You have to see one to know what I am talking about.  Super fun and everyone gets his or her own.  You can hold contests to see who can drink the fastest.  There are no negatives with this invention which has taken what was a college students’ makeshift gadget and finessed it so that it is reliable and well made. Inexpensive and you can use it many times.  Wash and air-dry before and after use.  No moving parts.  Oh, that is the drinker also.  Note that you get one,, not the whole container full of these for the advertised price.

Russian Roulette Revolver Shots Drinking Game

Russian Roulette Revolver Shots Drinking Game

Russian Roulette Revolver Shots Drinking Game

Neat way to play Russian Roulette and nobody gets hurt!

The handle holds a shot (2.5 ounces) and when the trigger is pulled, the barrel will go around, allowing one chamber only to shoot the liquor into a lucky drinker’s mouth.  A one in six chance to be … Winner!  It’s a bit dinky but a very fun accessory to have at a tailgate party to mix up the ways and methods of taking a swig of liquor in amongst all that beer.  Inexpensive for the laughs you will get.  And the gratitude the winner will show you after a shot of tequila or whatever you want to fill it with.  Again, wash and air dry before and after use or it could become nasty!!!

Glow In The Dark And Under Black Light Beer Bong

Glow In The Dark And Under Black Light Beer Bong

Glow In The Dark And Under Black Light Beer Bong

This Beer Blaster Beer Funnel is the one you will take out when the sun goes down or on those Friday nights. Guaranteed fun for everyone this Funnel & Tube Beer Bong is the classic style Beer Bong.  Holds just a smidge over 2 beers and comes with a 2 feet long hose.  A nice novelty at a low price.  Doesn’t have a tap so if you stop to belch then you’ll be wearing your booze.

Best Beer Towers For The Tailgate Party Reviewed

So you’re in the middle of a tailgate party, you want to BBQ, play games and serve your frosty beer at the same time.  Where’s the waiter?? And what can you do when you don’t own a kegerator? How about a few Beer Towers, each with its own beverage! Check out this list of the best beer towers for your tailgate party.

Awesome looking lined up in Drinks Central at your tailgate party, they’re known as Booze Tubes, Tabletop Beer Dispensers, Bazooka Tubes, or Beer Pitchers. They are low tech – few moving parts – probably the secret to the design’s affordability.  It pretty much adds up to a Yard of Beer but unlike those massive steins, glasses and containers, they stay cold.

Of course, the difference between this and the draft models can’t be denied.  But these are cheap and if your look after them, you’ll have them forever.  The bottom line is that they are a great accessory for the ‘bar’ or picnic table in the parking lot.

If you have a larger budget and a powered site, then you might want to consider a large kegerator and the draft beer towers and taps to go with that.  However, many people really can’t afford to throw down that much moolah – there are heaps of accessories and maintenance required for the big rigs.  So these little low-tech units are a great alternative and not to be sneezed at (or on).

Basically, this is like a well-sealed very tall pitcher, around a yard of beer, except many have a tube full of ice down their center.  Some light up with amazing colors.  They have a spigot tap for serving.  It’s up to you what you serve from them but I keep a dark beer in one, a light Pilsener in another and a medium bitter in another.  That seems to keep everyone happy.  Oh, and one with non-alcoholic beverage in for the designated driver.  You can purchase logos separately for the taps to identify your drinks.  Next day, fill it with a Bloody Mary with pickle juice and oysters for that essential pick-me-up hangover cure, hair of the dog and Vitamin C/Zinc hit and you’ll be rearing to go, ready for the next tailgate party.

Choosing a beer tower, you need to look for stability, an ice tube, (AKA chill stick, chill bat)  or flexible ice wrap, to keep the booze cold. Ease of cleaning and durability of the tube, tap and base are important too.  That’s it. Simple.

Note that the beer taps are intended to be carefully pulled down only a quarter of the way to dispense liquid. Taps will be damaged, if pulled completely down but if you break them you can easily get replacements.

Beer Tower from BarProducts.

Bar Products Beer Tower

Bar Products Beer Tower

Standing on a base of 8” diameter, this Beer Tower in just under a yard tall at 34”.  The tube is clear plastic and holds 3 liters (101.4 fluid ounces) of liquid.  A standard beer is 10 ounces, so you will get a little over 10 glasses from this.

Drinks are dispensed by pulling down the spigot handle (bar style) or pushing the button on the spout.

The ratio of base width to height is good and it should not tip over under normal circumstances.  Turn the tower to lock it into place on the stand.

Handy in a crowd situation – a few of these will keep the beer cold and people can help themselves.  Fill it with your home-brew!

This model does not come equipped with an ice tube and it is recommended that you purchase a freeze sleeve and wrap it around the tube, at least at the base of the beer section.  Obviously that doesn’t look as amazing as the amber liquid glowing through the tube, but it is functional.

Techni-ICE Sheets, Better than Ice or Gel Packs! Reusable, Dry Ice Replacement

Techni-ICE Sheets

Techni-ICE Sheets

These flexible sleeves are as good as dry ice, can be heated as well as frozen and will last for ever.  A great investment.  You can wrap these around anything to keep them cold and put one on your head next day to reduce your hangover.

Wyndham House 3.7qt (3.5l) Beverage Dispenser (No Ice-Tube)

Wyndham House 3.7qt (3.5l) Beverage Dispenser

Wyndham House 3.7qt (3.5l) Beverage Dispenser

With a capacity of 7 pints (3.7 quarts or 3.5 liters) this is quite large and surprisingly, is around half the price of most on the market.  The dimensions are 9-3/4″ x 33-1/2″ x 7-3/4″ so it is a little wider than most which may add to its stability.

Half the price of most on the market. as this model does not include an ice tube down its center so you would need to ‘sleeve’ it to keep the booze icy or buy a separate ice-tube.  Some say there is little need to do that as the turnover is quite fast at tailgate parties.

If you want the complete beer tower with matching ice-tube, check out the model here:

Wyndham House 3.7qt (3.5L) Beverage Dispenser (With Ice Tube)

Wyndham House 3.7qt (3.5L) Beverage Dispenser

Wyndham House 3.7qt (3.5L) Beverage Dispenser

Fundamentally, it’s the same as the beer tower above, but has a refillable ice-tube which you slip into the center.

The removable cooling chamber ensures drinks stay cold from the first fill-up to the last. Features ABS body, large dome base, removable ice cooling chamber, and removable tap for ease of cleaning.

Beer Tubes Stainless Steel Chill Stick (Beverage Cooler)

Beer Tubes Stainless Steel Chill Stick (Beverage Cooler)

Beer Tubes Stainless Steel Chill Stick

You want the beer chilled enough for drinking but not so cold that you get the ice-cream headache when the beer bong is in use.  The Chill Stick is designed to keep the product at optimal slamming temperature.

The investment is worthwhile though it is a little skimpy for a yard of beer. You may need two of these or a sleeve at the base as well depending on the day and where your tailgate party will be held.  In the heat, I would recommend a sleeve as well as the ice-tube.

Beer Tower 3 Liters with Ice Tube Draft Beer Tower Dispenser

Beer Tower 3 Liters with Ice Tube Draft Beer Tower Dispenser

Beer Tower 3 Liters w Ice Tube

Capacity is 3 liters or around 10 standard beers.   The ice-tube is removable and detaches from the base for easy cleaning and re-fills with ice.  DO NOT fill with water and freeze.  It is designed to hold ice-blocks and will not stand up to being put in the freezer and frozen.

At least this one comes with its own ice-tube.  It’s a standard beer tower not much different from many on the market.

As with others, your tailgate party guests can help themselves to cold drinks of all kinds from this dispenser. I would never put dairy drinks in this as the cleaning would be painful.  And heck, what a waste!  Beer is so much less labor intensive ….

Lighted Beer Tower with Ice Tube

Lighted Beer Tower with Ice Tube

Lighted Beer Tower with Ice Tube

But if you are looking for a point of difference, this may be it!

As with the beer towers we have already looked at, you have your yard of beer in a clear plastic tube firmly fastened to a base measuring 8” in diameter and the removable ice-tube is keeping the beverage frosty which you are accessing through the pull-down bar-style handle.  But then … whoo-hoo!  It lights up!  The battery operated light effects make it look like your tailgate party has its own cool bar.

Note that the ice-tube is very well sealed.  You just fill it with cubes and seal it and no leakage into the beer to water down that great taste.

Holds 9 – 10 standard beers or 2 blenders full of margaritas.

To fill the tower without spillage or an excess of foamy froth, place it low down and have a friend hold it on an angle as though you are pouring a beer.  Dribble the beer slowly down the side.  The tap will add a nice head to the beer when drinkers are pouring their own booze from it.

Cleaning hints can be found below!

The BrewTender Tabletop Beer & Beverage Dispenser

The BrewTender Tabletop Beer & Beverage Dispenser

The BrewTender Tabletop Beer & Beverage Dispenser

The tube holds up to 80 ounces and keeps it cold, ready for your guests to serve themselves. Sack the waiter!  It’s perfect for tailgate parties and has built in lights that glow up through the drink for an amazing effect.

Beer dispensing happens within a few seconds.

Dimensions: 20 1/2″H x 7″D

Note that for these Beer Towers with onboard lighting, don’t leave the light on all the time or it will heat the beer.  A good hint is to buy a backup ice-tube and add this in when the first has defrosted.

If you want to store this in the fridge, you will need to remove all the shelves as it is almost a yard high.

You can take it to your local pub and get them to fill it with their beer tap.  Way easier than doing it yourself.

It is an essential ingredient for tailgate party drinking games as it keeps the action happening fast.

80 Oz Bever. Cooling Dispenser – Style KTBEVDS

80 Oz Bever. Cooling Dispenser

80 Oz Bever. Cooling Dispenser

Same size as the one above, this also lights up and I guess what you are paying for are the design, the concept and manufacturing as the materials are not exactly solid state, though it works and will last if you take care of it.

Like the other lit up beer towers, this one will lose its cool if you keep the lights on all the time so either get a backup ice-tube or turn the lights off from time to time.

NOTE: Put the ice-tube in the fridge (not freezer) overnight before you put the ice in to maximize the cooling effect.

3 Liter “Shorty” Beer Tube with Ice Tube

3 Liter "Shorty" Beer Tube with Ice Tube

3 Liter “Shorty” Beer Tube w Ice Tube

Here’s a Beer tower that is a lot easier to cart along to your parking lot tailgate party.  It still holds 3 liters (10 standard serves of beer approx..) but s only 23” tall and sits on a wide, 14” base.  The tower is large, 5 ¾” in diameter and the kit includes the ice-tube insert that you can fill with ice and keep the drink cool.  Because it is rather squat, it is more stable and will fit into your tailgate party food kit more easily.  It is simple to transport with integrated handles and The Shorty is lightweight in design and manufacture.

So far, it’s my favorite for parking lot use due to its stability and ease of cleaning and transporting.  Easier to fill also.

Chrome Metal 1-Faucet Beer Tower – 3″ Column. For Draft Beer.

Chrome Metal 1-Faucet Beer Tower

Chrome Metal 1-Faucet Beer Tower

OK, so I am just including this as a comparison.  If you invest in a kegerator, you can use one of these on the top for dispensing your booze.  It’s chrome and has one faucet for serving and the size is 3” across and  approximately 18” tall.  It has 5 feet of hose leading to your beer supply (which would be in the keg) and the nuts and couplers for it are standard.  Mounting gasket screws are in the kit.

Even though this is a commercial grade single faucet chrome-plated metal draft beer tower and the same tower that is found on all commercial grade kegerators such as True and Beverage Air, it’s not a heck of a lot more expensive than the cheap counter-top beer towers. Of course, buying the kegorator is another thing entirely but if your tailgate party is rowdy, the beer front and center as the entertainment, then you might want to cut straight to the pro equipment.   No flashing lights though.  Oh, and the counter-top models are cheap enough so that you can buy one for each beverage.

Double Tap Stainless Steel Draft Beer Kegerator Tower – 3″ Diameter

Double Tap Stainless Steel Draft Beer Kegerator Tower

Double Tap Stainless Steel Draft Beer Kegerator Tower

And now, here’s the dual tap version.  Again, you need a kegorator for this assembly to work and it is connected with 5 feet of hose.

Has a stainless steel tower with two brass taps on top to keep that beer flowing fast.

It is air cooled.  Mounting assembly is included.  Solidly engineered. Some people use this one for mounting on the top of a mini refrigerator and converting it into a kegorator.  If home brewing is for you, then this system is perfect as you can keep the kit in the fridge to stay sterile during the process.  If tailgate parties are all about the beer, then this fast-flowing tap is all about tailgate parties, particularly the home-gating type.
And for keeping those beer cans cool:

Kalorik Mini Cooler

Kalorik Mini Cooler

Kalorik Mini Cooler

This little cooler holds and dispenses 12 cans of beer.  Or soft drink if that’s your thing.  It has a built-in refrigerating system to keep all of the drinks nice and cool

The hardware is very sturdy and retro in design.  You can shove it in small spaces when packing for the tailgate party.

Needs an external power source to stay cold. So really, it’s better for home-gating than tailgating.  Unless you have a generator.

Now a word about cleaning your precious beer dispenser.  Beer can be susceptible to bacteria if the equipment isn’t kept clean.  So here are some suggestions. Cleaning is actually quite simple as the tube detaches from the base.  Clean with the longest handled brush you can find.

1. Invest in this super long handled beer tower tube brush and you will make life easy after the tailgate party has long since ended and guests have migrated to the stadium to watch the play.

Beer Tower Tube Brush

Beer Tower Tube Brush

The brush assembles to a 32.5” length, long enough to reach the bottom of your Yard of Beer Tower or just use it half size for the Shorty.  It has a durable plastic stem with a hook on the end for convenient storage when not in use, and soft but powerful scrubbing bristle to attack the edges of the tower.

2. Rinse the tower and tap after the use.  I appreciate that you may be in some remote parking lot and can’t get to a convenient place to do this immediately.  So if you miss this step, you may need to progress to step 3.

3. Scrub the tower using a few drops of a detergent that has NO PERFUME.

4. Rinse, rinse and rinse again.

5. If your tower has been contaminated by yeasty molds from standing beer, soak it in a food grade bleach such as the solution baby bottles are soaked in.  Milton tablets are fast and reliable (15 minutes soaking only and also don’t affect the taste of the brew) and you can buy them at

Milton Maximum Protection

Milton Maximum Protection

Then rinse and dry prior to adding beer.  It is not a bad idea to rinse it out with a shot of cheap vodka.  It is a great tool to have in the first aid kit or your cleaning kit.  Yes, truly.  And you could even drink it after … or clean your shoes.  If you have left your beer tower full of beer (yeah, that will happen – well, not at my tailgate parties … ) and have a yeasty mold problem, you can also use vinegar to clean it and then rinse well with warm water and air dry.  Alternatively, throw in some grains of uncooked rice (about ¼ cup) and shake it with some warm soapy water before rinsing thoroughly to remove all residue.  The combination of one or all the methods above will keep your tower 100% clean.

Top 7 Breathalyzers For Tailgate Parties

Nobody wants to get stung with a DUI after a really fun tailgate party.  You might not be falling-down drunk but, if you’re over the limit, you can’t be out on the roads behind the wheel.

Smart folk – whether hosts or guests – have a Breathalyzer with a heap of individually wrapped mouthpieces on hand.  This way, drinkers can make sure that they are OK for driving.   It’s good to test that level with more than the ‘walk a straight line’ or balance test.

Generally speaking, the Breathalyzers on the market for home use are accurate in a wide range.  They are not ‘legally’ accurate.  A note of caution, nearly all require a re-calibration to set them to be closer to giving a realistic read, at least every year, but if you are blowing these above the recommended level (and that varies for every model) you should send it back to the maker more regularly.  Read the instructions, and don’t depend on solely on them to tell you whether or not you should drive.  Note that an hour after stopping drinking, your blood alcohol level continues to rise.  So re-test.  And those old myths about how masking your breath with a packet of mintie flavored candies will reduce the reading is dangerous.  The boost of sugar to your blood can give you a false ‘high’ and you’ll be fine for a moment or two, but it will have no affect of actually lowering the BAC. (Blood alcohol content).

In the available Breathalyzers, there are basically two types of sensors -semiconductor-based or fuel cell-based. The semiconductor-based are the least expensive and are generally inconsistent and not meant to be exact (in a legal reading sense). The fuel cell-based models are more costly but provide accurate and consistent results.

Here are some of the best Breathalyzers we found from each of the two models, ranging from the ‘pro’ styles to the simpler (and less accurate) often key-ring gadgets.

BACtrack Select S80 Breathalyzer Professional Edition

BACtrack Select S80 Breathalyzer Professional Edition

BACtrack S80 Breathalyzer

Highly rated by many users and buyers, the plastic bodied BACTRACK Select S80 uses fuel cell sensor technology (similar to that used by law enforcement officers in the field).

It features a one button operation which allows users to press the power and begin testing in seconds.  The 4 digit LCD displays accurate test results in extended format. The pack (6 x 4 x 2 inches) comes already packed in its own case, instructions, 6 mouthpieces and a zippered pocket for stashing some spare mouthpieces and batteries.

It’s a good idea to have those additional supplies on hand, depending on how many guests you are expecting.  It’s battery operated (always bring a spare).  The reading should take place 20 minutes or more after the last drink or food have been consumed – any earlier, and the reading won’t mean a thing. Provides enhanced linear accuracy and extended battery life.  It is designed for continuous temperature checking, user-adjustable warning levels, and internal pump system for breath capture.

Requires annual return to the company for calibration (or 200 – 300 tests) which is an additional $20 plus shipping.

Full instructions should be read and retained.
Testers should take a deep breath before blowing (just as the police will tell you when testing on the road).  Then wait for 10 seconds for the display to show up.

Cheaper to buy this than paying a fine, gaining demerits, risking jail or probation and safer than being in an accident and causing harm.

If you are worried about its accuracy, check it on a non-drinker and then on someone who is patently drunk and you will see the difference.

Small enough to be portable but gutsy enough to be accurate and will give you confidence in its performance.  Not much bigger than a phone.  Keeps a tally of tests completed (so that you can be sure that re-calibration happens in a timely fashion.

Always reset to zero before using. Note that blowing a low reading is not a license to drink more and then go and drive.  Drinking and driving is not cool.  There’s always someone you can rope in to be the designated driver.

BACtrack Keychain Breathalyzer, Portable Keyring Breath Alcohol Detector – The KC 10.

BACtrack Keychain Breathalyzer

BACtrack Keychain Breathalyzer

These small keychain models are cheap and there’s a reason for that.  They are not as accurate as the sensor type and many comparison tests have been done.  It requires a few AAA batteries but it does give a rough indication of BAC which will warn you not to drive.  To give you any reading at all, it does need live, fresh batteries and they only last for 50 or so blows.  If you can get a reliable rechargeable battery, use those or it will be costing a lot. Be sure to turn it off in between drinking bouts! Conserve the battery life.  It does have an auto cut-off switch but I never trust those.

Full instructions should be read.

Leave enough time between tests for the machine to charge up again.

Note that your BAC will vary according to your size.

As with other breathalyzers, wait the required 20 minutes (no food, no booze) before testing.

This little model – semi-conductor based – needs to be returned to the company every 6 months for calibration.  But if you are using it a heap and sharing it, you should send it more often.  Just use common sense.

It’s not perfect but it is extremely inexpensive and can be used as a guide only and again, not a legally accurate measurement.

Alcohawk Slim Digital Breathalyzer

Alcohawk Slim Digital Breathalyzer

Alcohawk Slim Digital Breathalyzer

One-button, quick operation, small enough to keep in the glove box, handbag BBQ tool box, or tailgate party kit, this is the cheaper version of the Alcohawk range. It uses semiconductor technology as is the case with all these smaller models.  Its electronic airflow sensor is designed to harvest a deep lung sample for testing and it measures the BAC within a range of 0.000 – 0.400%.  Calibrated for accuracy.  2 digit display.  Wait 20 minutes as with any Breathalyzer.

Starter calibration is a little slow to show up (60 seconds) and then you need to wait up to 3 minutes to blow, having taken a deep breath. The wait for another 10 seconds for the result.   It works, just takes a bit of time.

You can clean out the mouthpieces and re-use them.

Readings are accurate, but you just need to have a bit of patience.

Fits easily in your pocket to take to that tailgate party with you.

AlcoHawk Pro: Professional Edition Digital Breathalyzer

AlcoHawk Pro: Professional Edition Digital Breathalyzer

AlcoHawk Pro: Digital Breathalyzer

Here’s the big brother of the Slimline.  It includes 5 mouthpieces, carrying case,wrist-strap for portability, 9 Volt battery, DC car adapter (Plug) , instructions, zipper bag with space for additional batteries and gear making it travel friendly. Uses semiconductor oxide sensor.  LED display is easy to read.

Single button operation, it features FlowCheck breath monitoring system for max accuracy and is used in lots of pro situations: police, clinics, schools, concerned parents, employers and tailgate party animals.  It is one of the few approved by DOT/NHTSA and FDA.

Follow the instructions and this will be really useful and is small enough to keep near you at a tailgate party without becoming annoying.

Battery life is impressive.  The sensor is accurate if the directions are followed.

BACtrack Element Professional Digital Breathalyzer with Fuel Cell Technology

BACtrack Element Professional Digital Breathalyzer with Fuel Cell Technology

BACtrack Element Digital Breathalyzer

The Element uses xtend fuel cell sensor technology for trusted, accurate results and the process is fast taking only 10 seconds to get a result.  Again, it is important to read the instructions before using for the first time. Educate your tailgate party guests on how to make it work.  For instance, wait the 20 minutes after eating/drinking, take a deep slow breath and exhale (process is assisted by the revolutionary air pump design).  This is claimed to be the smallest and simplest full-feature fuel cell Breathalayzer in the world.  Very portable.

Calibration is important and costs $20 a go plus shipping and if you use this for all your guests at the tailgate party, you could easily rack up a heap of blows, **  requiring annual – or more often – returning to the makers.  It is still cheaper than a DUI.  Don’t think you can avoid this step!  Do count your tests and keep an accurate list FYI.

** (around 75 tests according to some users, but 400-500 uses are claimed by BACtrack who say frequent use is advised to keep the sensor moist so don’t keep it packed away, take it out and use it every few days even if not drinking. Take it to your tailgate friends and test it on your friends.)

Note that Breathalyzers are an indication only.  For an accurate BAC you need a blood test.  Even the patrol car testing kits are just the ‘entry point’ to further checks of your sobriety or otherwise.

Takes 2 AAA batteries (supplies).

The Element has been tested by the DOT/NHTSA (Department of Transportation/National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and meets their requirements for a breath alcohol screening device. And because the Element has also received FDA 510(k) pre-marketing clearance, it is available for personal, consumer use as well.

The company BACtrack is seen as authorities in the field of Breathalyzers and the gadgets have starred on CSI:Miami, The Doctors, Dr. Phil, MythBusters and Ask Oprah’s All Stars.

SVAT AL100 Breathalyzer Personal Digital Breath Alcohol Tester Detector Analyzer

SVAT AL100 Breathalyzer Personal Digital Breath Alcohol Tester Detector Analyzer

SVAT AL100 Breathalyzer

This is a small model, more for fun than accuracy, cheap though.  At a tailgate party, or wherever good beers are being enjoyed, I would pay the dollars and get a fuel cell model instead.

Its pros are that it is lightweight, compact and cheap, easy to use and handy in the car.

Its cons are that it is not accurate according to a number of users and really can only be used to give you some indication of the wide range of your BAC.

Considering that such an important issue is being measured, a better model is warranted.

Alcomate AL9000 AccuCell Breathalyzer

Alcomate AL9000 AccuCell Breathalyzer

Alcomate AL9000 AccuCell Breathalyzer

The AL9000 is top of the range of these portable units, using the more durable, reliable and scientifically accurate fuel cell technology (electrochemical).

It’s DOT approved with high degree of accuracy.  It features an easily read, large, 4-digit decimal display, deep-lung air sampling with the pump mechanism to assist that process fast, it beeps to let you know when it is ready at each stage and also indicates when the battery is low.  That is a handy feature.

The results are consistent and accurate and a recommended additional use would be if your job required random breath testing, you could test yourself first and go and hide out in the restrooms till you sober up.

But me, I just like to have one of these in my tailgate kit, test any driving guests and hide their car-keys if they blow a high number.

Drinking games and consumption of BBQ and beers are such a fun part of tailgate parties that is comforting to have one of these on hand to be 100% sure that your guests will be safe on the way home.  Anywhere there is a beer-bong, there should be an Alcomate AL9000!

Tailgate Party Games: Dizzy Bat

All these years I had  been whittling the top off a wiffle ball bat and using that for this game and now there is a superbly designed bat with the holes in the right place and the ability to hold (and that means ‘chug’) not one, not two but three 12 oz beers.

Dizzy Bat, (also known as Louisville slugger, D-bat, and The Spins) is a tailgate party game par excellence. It’s a fun drinking game for tailgate parties in car-parks as it combines drinking with dizziness and chugging.

Tailgate Party Game - Dizzy Bat

Dizzy Bat

How To Play Dizzy Bat Version 1

You need a bat, some cans of beer, a stopwatch for timing, some good repertoire of drinking chants to encourage the players.

Pour some beers into the hollow bat (you can use a wiffle ball bat and cut the top off but the one above works perfectly).  Keep the empty cans as they will be used in the game.

Players take turns. This is an individual game.

Player in play must chug the contents of the bat while the audience chants.  Someone times the turn.

Working at speed the player then must to 5 spins with his/her head on the top of the bat, and the hand on the ground.  At all times Player must be in contact via his/her head with the bat and the bat must also be on the ground.  (The audience counts down the spins the louder the better – ‘5-4-3-2-1!’.)

At the end of the 5 spins, the ‘pitcher’ takes an empty beer can and crunches it and pitches it to Player.

The Player must hit it with the bat.

If Player misses the pitch, he/she must refill the bat, chug, do the 5 spins and try again.  Any collapsing during the game means instant disqualification.

Dizzy Bat Spin

Dizzy Bat Spinning

The time is recorded and at the end of the round, one person is crowned Dizzy Bat champ.

Dizzy bat is a registered trademark of the company producing bats for the drinking game it got its name from.

How To Play Dizzy Bat Version 2

The Player chugs a full beer out of the holding end of a wiffle ball bat.

While the person is chugging, the surrounding audience counts off in seconds how long it takes for the person to finish the full beer.

The audience cannot stop shouting numbers until the batter turns the bat upside down to prove that every last drop has been consumed.

Then the Player must lean over and spin around forehead placed on the end of the bat for however long it took to finish chugging (in seconds). This could be a very long time!  Or not!

Once the Player has finished spinning, a person designated the pitcher throws the empty beer can and the Player must hit the can with the wiffle ball bat.

If the Player misses the can, they must spin an additional three times and try again to hit it again.

Dizzy Bat Chug

Dizzy Bat Chug

How To Play Dizzy Bat Version 3

“Team Dizzy Bat” requires two even teams with two bats competing against each other in a relay race, with the bats acting as the baton.

Each team splits into two even groups facing each other about fifteen yards apart with both bats starting on the same side.

Instead of the players drinking a full beer from the inside of the wiffle ball bat, they must drink a full beer (can, cup, or bottle) then spin around ten times and run over to their other group passing the bat to next player. Whichever team finishes first is the games winner.

This Dizzy Bat is made with high durable plastic, an easy grip handle and custom air hole for easy venting and fast drinking. It’s excellent for tailgating, and clearly this Dizzy Bat will become a staple game at your parties once you discover this bat.

Note that the longer you take to chug your booze, the more spins you will need to do so speed is important in the game as well as accuracy in the hitting.

The instructions on the package are:

To play fill the Dizzy Bat with the desired amount of liquid (make sure to plug the venting hole). Tip the bat back to your mouth, uncover the venting hole and chug away! Then the game gets fun. The number of seconds it takes you to drink the liquid equals the numbers of spins you need to do so make it quick. Put your forehead to the bat and start spinning (face down)! Once you’ve spun around the required amount of times, try to hit an incoming ball or can thrown by one of your buddies! Pass the bat to the next participant and keep the party going. Dizzy Bat is an awesome way to get everyone involved to have a good time. Dizzy Bat is intended for those of a legal drinking age. Have a good time with Dizzy Bat –  drink responsibly. Don’t drink and drive.

Homemade Dizzy Bat

Here’s the home-made game version.  Participants in the game of Dizzy Bat use any number of plastic, hollowed bats. Players can create their own bat using a standard Wiffle Ball Bat by removing the handle end to create an opening and punching a hole on the bat end to create air flow. Alternatively, players can purchase one of the commercially available bats, such as “The Dizzy Bat”.

32" Wiffle Bat

32″ Wiffle Bat

Nowhere does anyone mention that the bats are food-grade plastic so be aware and don’t chew on the bat just in case.

One day it will be an Olympic sport, mark my words, as you need some pretty awesome hand-to-eye coordination, speed and accuracy, not to mention bladder control to win this game.

Three Cheers For The Red Solo Cup: A Design Miracle!

Did you know that the lines on a red solo cup are actually measurements?  A learned friend told me this just today and I was happy indeed to know this piece of information.  You see, it means that a whole lot of thought went into this item that most of us just throw away.  We should revere it!

Line one =1 oz and is for spirits/liquor

Line two = 5 oz and is for wine

Line three = 12 oz and is for beer

The makers (Solo) say yes, they are pretty spot on, but really, they were not intended as legal standard measurements ie. for arguing your DUI.

And really, who stops pouring beer at the 12 oz line when foaming coldies are way better when you can sip them right from the brim of the cup?

And you can buy 240 of them for less than $20!  Wow!  An engineering miracle, worthy of a design prize.

How To Clean A Kegerator – Video

Clean your kegerator after every keg. Trust me – do it! You don’t want to ruin the pure, fresh taste of a quality beer. Actually – you don’t even want to ruin the taste of a cheap beer because, if you don’t clean out your kegerator every time you replace the keg, you risk build up of bacteria, yeast or all sorts of nasty germs. Bugs and flies can crawl in as well and I’m sure you don’t like the taste of insects with beer.

Top 10 Best Beer Keg Dispensers: Kegerator Reviews

A good kegerator is the key to fresh, frosty, tasty beer. You might be more familiar with the term Beer Keg Dispenser but now ‘kegerator’ has become a universal word! A kegerator is basically a fridge, drill, tap, faucet, hose, CO2 tank, CO2 regulator and a detachable keg. While it’s possible for the handyman to build their own, there’s now a huge range of quality, affordable (and some less affordable) beer keg dispensers available for purchase. There are a few places you can get them – but you can also get great bargains on Amazon.

Oh, and it can be spelt ‘kegorator’.  However you spell it, savvy connoisseurs and beer-a-holics claim that there is really nothing to beat draft beer from one of these clever household appliances for taste, foamy head and convenience.

You can improvise your own or buy a flashy looking one that will look very nice in your man-cave or outdoor kitchen and many are small enough to take tailgating and will do the job for a small party.

I’ve looked at a few through my beer goggles and sampled a brewski or two thousand and here are my best picks in no particular order… each has a specific happy drinker.

Note that these are representative of the ‘classes’ of kegerators on the market: compact, free-standing, one-tap – two-tap, three tap, built in, counter-top. While the ones reviewed here all have some negatives, they are the best of what is on the market at present.  Ask any bar server and he/she will tell you that even in the top rung commercial systems, the lines need to stay clean and servicing your machine is something to be done after every tailgate party.  (Sleep off the party, then clean thoroughly).

Kegco Kegerator Keg Beer Dispenser - Single Faucet

Kegco Kegerator Keg Beer Dispenser – Single Faucet

This Kegco is a solid freestanding appliance that has the pouring station/glass rack at the top.  It runs quietly though be warned that all kegerators give off little pops from time to time.  The company is very big on customer service which is a plus as owning your first one of these can be a bit freaky.

Just read the set up instructions carefully or check out some of our tailgate videos for help with kegerators!
PROS:

  • The Kegco K199SS-1 Kegerator features a Black Cabinet with a Decorative Stainless Door
  • Includes Commercial Single Gauge Co2 Regulator
  • Commercial Grade D system Lever Handle Keg Tap Coupler
  • 3″ Diameter Chrome Plated Metal Draft Beer Tower
  • Includes a brand new aluminum 5 lb. Aluminum Co2 Tank

  • Has castors beneath so you can move it from room to room or your patio.  Would fit into an RV so if your thing is traveling around the nation tailgating as you go, this is for you.
  • Includes everything you need except gas.

CONS:

  • 3 times as expensive as the low-end but that is relative. May be too ‘high end’ for student tailgating but on the other hand, this will last.
  • As with all kegerators, you need to source a local gas provider.nSo is it better comparative value than the cheap version?  I think it is as many people use this in commercial settings and they take a real beating.  It just looks like a small bar fridge but open the door and there’s room for a small or large keg and the gas bottle.

SPECS:
This Kegco K199SS-1 comes complete with all the necessary Draft Beer equipment you need to pour Fresh Draft Beer straight from your keg. Included with the Kegco K199SS-1 Kegerator is a 5lb Aluminum Co2 Tank, a Single Gauge Regulator, a Sankey Keg Coupler, and a 15″ Chrome Plated Metal Draft Beer Tower that will impress any Beer Aficionado. The Single Gauge Regulator measures Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI), features a Safety Blow Off at 55-65 PSI, and comes with a flow control inlet nipple filter as well as a permanent Quad-Ring Inlet Seal. The Sankey Keg Coupler is designed to fit most of your favorite Domestic beer kegs.

Note: The lightweight, 5lb Aluminum Co2 Tank is the preferred size of many brewers. It is shipped empty and does not come filled. You will need to get your Co2 Tank–for your Kegerator–filled locally. When filled, the 5 lb tank is good for approximately 5-6 full size kegs.

TIP: Coors Kegs will not fit into this Kegerator.

TIP: Most beer distributors and gas companies will only exchange Co2 bottles, (your empty plus a cost for the gas for their full one) so you can save bucks on the purchase by not getting the tank if there is nowhere near you that fills your own tank.  Stores that specialise in equipment including Fire Extinguishers will fill them up for about ⅓ the cost – cheaper in the long run to own your own tank.
TIP: Please check with your bottle shop to make sure the keg will fit.  The ones I have visited have a chart in the keg area.  Take your model number and specs with you.

2. KRUPS and HEINEKEN B100 BeerTender with Heineken Draught Keg technology

Krups and Keineken Beer Tender Kegerator

Krups and Keineken Beer Tender Kegerator

Of all the counter-top models on the market, the Krups and Heineken B100 reviews best as the preferred entry level machine.  Get a few months of practice and build your capacity to use this at tailgate parties before attempting to buy the others.  It is like the training wheels of the Keg Dispenser world: once you have mastered the basics, you will eventually need an upgrade.

It’s officially limited to Heineken and Newcastle beer which for some is a problem but read on to learn about a hack that broadens the range of beers you can put through it.

PROS:

  • Maintains beer at the ideal temperature of 37.4 degrees F
  • Engineered to work exclusively with Heineken, Heineken Premium Light and Newcastle Brown Ale
  • Ultra quiet and efficient Peltier cooling system provides constant and consistent cooling of the keg
  • DraughtKeg and Beertender keep beer fresh for 30 days after tapping
  • Unit measures 21-Inch L by 12-Inch W by 18-Inch H; Comes with 5 draught tubes
  • Super compact and fits on kitchen counter top next to the espresso machine.
  • Can take it with you if you have a powered tailgate party site.
  • Cheap to run.
  • Can take advantage of the keg specials at your BevMo or other booze store.

Though the B100 is designed for Heineken and Newcastle beers you can hook up this Tap Conversion Kit which allows you to use any other 5-Liter mini kegs. This may void the warranty but at this price it seems worth the risk.

CONS:

  • Not even intended for other beers. Specifically for the beers named on the box.
  • Very lightweight and you can’t use it to do a keg-stand.  Hmmm. That will rule out my Nana-Marjorie’s party-trick from now on.
  • Need to pre-chill the keg at least 10 hours before putting it in.
  • Some people say it dies after 12 months. Oops, just out of warranty.  Well, that seems to be the way with toasters, kettles etc. these days so think about extended warranty if that is offered.
  • Tubes are proprietary and are a little pricey.

TIP: To extend the life of the product, keep it clean and dry after use and avoid a build up of condensation beneath it.
TIP: Think about extended warranty or some kind of insurance to protect it beyond the life of your tailgate season.

  • Specs do say it is for indoor use only, but I have seen these used in tents, RVs, trailers and other outdoor catered events. Keep it out of the sun and rain.
  • The kegerator is designed to be freestanding and should not be placed in a built-in or recessed area. This may limit where you can install it (eg. in your tailgating party bus!) The following dimensions are recommended for clearances around the kegerator: Sides 3/4″ (19 mm) Back 1″ (25 mm)
  • Heavy: Kegerator unit weight: 77.6 lbs.
  • Not cheap.  But then, you get what you pay for so the extra cost may keep it running all the way through your college years.

DIMENSIONS:
The kegerator comes with a 2.5 lb. CO2 bottle, which should be able to dispense four 15 gallon kegs of beer
Kegerator capacity: 4.6 cu. ft.
Kegerator unit dimensions: L 20.25″ x W 25.75″ x H 48.50″
Single faucet

TIP: The tank is supplied EMPTY so if you are considering this model, do some research and find your local Co2 dealer.
TIP:   Keep track of the amount of CO2 in the tank or adjust pressure with the included double meter regulator.  That way you won’t run out in the middle of a tailgate party.  It is quite a luxury to buy a backup tank but if you think you will need one, then it is better than being beerless.

4. Nostalgia Electrics KRS-6100SS Kegerator Double Tap Beer Keg Fridge

Nostalgia Double Tap Stainless Steel Kegerator

Nostalgia Double Tap Stainless Steel Kegerator

This is fundamentally the TWO TAP version of the above model with similar specifications. For the generous tailgate host who wants to provide variety in the beer offerings, say, a dark and light ale. It seems like a good ‘middle of the road’ appliance, not really a commercial quality but could easily be used in a small enterprise or by someone whose tailgate parties are awesome.

Holds the following keg sizes: Up to two 1/6 barrel (5.23-Gallon) kegs, one 1/4 barrel short (7-3/4-gallon) keg, one 1/4 barrel slim (7-3/4) keg or one ½ barrel (15 ½  gallon keg)

Stainless steel with black finish and 6.0-cubic feet of interior space (can be used as a standard fridge.

Includes two American Sankey “D” double tap systems, double meter regulator and 2-1/2-pound Co2 tank (unfilled) 13-Inch chrome beer tower and and guardrail with a removable stainless steel drip tray.

Adjustable thermostat.

PROS:

  • Two taps
  • Holds 3 kegs (5 gallons)
  • Doesn’t suck too much electricity
  • Design is pleasant
  • Excellent range of temperatures (approx. 33-40 degrees F.)
  • Good quality dual gauge regulator.
  • Consistent delivery and service of beer.

CONS:

  • Like others, I would prefer a 5 lb. tank. It’s too hard to change tanks in the middle of a tailgate party.
  • The black plastic on the top is disappointing and not really solid.
  • The drip tray is not ‘fixed’ but just sits there.
  • Castors seem a little light for such a heavy item but so far no problem.
  • Some feedback has commented on the beer and gas lines being inferior and you can change these to a more solid version and you cans pimp up the faucets as well.

5. EdgeStar Deluxe Mini Kegerator & Draft Beer Dispenser

Mini Kegerator Refrigerator & Draft Beer Dispenser

Mini Kegerator Refrigerator & Draft Beer Dispenser

This is supposed to suit certain home brew kegs in addition to the Heineken and Newcastle and some others so make sure you check sizes carefully.  Reports are that it is very limited in the beers that fit it.   It is a ‘mini’ so don’t expect too much.

PROS:

  • Small and lightweight.
  • Dimensions: 15inches h x 15inches w x 13inches dAC and DC compatible with DC adaptor cord included for easy portability
  • Temperature Range: 38-54 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Accepts Heineken 5 liter Draughtkegs
  • Capacity: 1 standard 5L mini keg
  • This model has been on the market since 2008 and without modification and has sold well due to its compact size and slick look.
  • Nice little gift.
  • It is small and comparatively light weight at 29 pounds (heck, even I can lift a couple of these singlehanded) and if you have a powered site for your tailgating party, this is a great feature and will save you a lot of other beer-toting space on the day. You can even buy a couple and fill them with different beers in the range that fit.

CONS:

  • Not very sturdy. It has the appearance of a kitchen appliance rather than a solid state commercial gadget.
  • They appear to have an expiry date of around a year and are expensive to mend (if that is possible).
  • The hoses tend to clog up with gunk from the beer and this can be affected by bacteria.  Some even need cleaning after every use. ••• (see below)
  • Tricky to use and to maintain until you get the hang of it.  Keep on testing! (Oh, that’s probably a PRO).
  • Do not shake the kegerator while travelling and be sure to keep it cold and out of the sun, or you will find that your beer can be 50% foam or more after tapping. Even the non-pre-pressurized kegs have a high pressure when first opened. Try turning off the Co2 completely for the first few serves, then gradually increase the Co2 flow of Co2 by opening the valve.  As the level of beer in the keg decreases, the foam problem will also decrease.
  • Add-ons and maintenance can be expensive (cleaning, new hoses)
  • Only used for Heineken, Heinken Lite and Newcastle Brown Ale. Limiting.

6. T-fal VB2158 BeerTender Home Beer-Tap System

T-fal BeerTender Home Beer Mini Kegerator

T-fal BeerTender Home Beer Mini Kegerator

PROS:

  • Ready indicator light ensure ideal drinking temperature.
  • Removable stainless steel drip tray.
  • Detachable pouring spout for easy cleaning.
  • Detachable tap handle.
  • Lighted On/Off button
  • Weighs only around 16 pounds so is a bit of a lightweight in the kegerator range and has been around for ten years or so, still selling well, no doubt for Father’s Day, wedding gifts and the emerging man cave phenom.
  • It is a simple design with limited gadgetry (eg. no digital display or clock but you can sacrifice this for the savings on models that are fully pimped out).

CONS:

  • Its major problem was that it was limited to the Heineken size and Newcastle Brown Ale but the brewers promised to change this and if you ask at your booze retailer, most have a list of alternative beers that will fit.
  •  This is an entry level appliance and probably not for the heavy users.
  • It is not really made to last which is reflected in its low price.  It gets progressively noisier and then will eventually fail altogether and replacing it is cheaper than getting it mended due to the high cost of parts.
  • Price wise, this size keg is no cheaper than bottles or cans but obviously the fresh draft is way smoother and tastier once you master the technique of tapping it.
  • If you enjoy your experience, then next time, invest in one of the sturdier, larger and made-to-last models.

TIP: take your kegerator specs with you when you are shopping for beer.

TIP: Don’t forget to budget for your tubes on top of the keg cost. You can re-use these – sadly they are sealed in such a way that cleaning them is impossible but it’s worth a try!

7. Haier HBF05EBSS Draft Beer Dispenser

Haier Draft Beer Dispenser

Haier Draft Beer Dispenser

PROS:

  • Complete American Sankey Tap System that Holds 1/2, 1/4 & Mini Barrel Kegs.
  • Adjustable Thermostat .
  • Chrome Beer Tower & Guardrail, so you won’t fall off when you are doing your keg stand.
  • Heavy Duty Worktop & CabinetDecorative Stainless Steel Door with Black Cabinet.
  • Weight: 106 pounds which is still light enough for you to fit this into your tailgating RV.  Awesome!
  • Door to door shipping but have a friend to help you after that.Whoaaaa, tailgate party rehearsal! 5 gallons of beer to rehearse with.
  • Holds 5 gallons.
  • Takes many sizes and types of kegs.
  • Easy setup but before doing so, check all parts are there according to the instructions.
  • If you don’t like reading instructions, ask your mother to come and help.
  • High quality engineering but noted some reports of problems.
  • Once setup, it will keep the keg perfectly chilled and pressurized for many hours.  Sadly, I haven’t been able to test this as no kegs have lasted beyond tailgate party time.
  • Beer as good as in a brew pub.
  • A quiet unit to operate when it is new – this may change after months of operation (eg. like any appliance).
  • It is one of the few Kegerators that can fit a Coors Light 1/2 barrel keg.
  • The C02 tank is inside the fridge. Most other models it is on the outside which makes you unable to push it flush against the wall.

CONS:

  •  Adjusting the Co2 can be tricky as you don’t want it to be too foamy (Co2 setting too high) so you have to experiment before your tailgate party turns into a foam party. Unless that is your thing. Well, that could be a PRO.
  • Locating a Co2 refiller can be a real drag.  It is annoying to hand over your empty brand new canister and be given a dinged old one (full) back.  Call around and find a REFILLER not an EXCHANGER if you have the time.
  • Haier America has a poor record for customer service.  You need to keep all receipts and shipping info and email these with any requests for service.  You’ll be lucky to get a response in 2 days.  When they call, be very assertive and put a deadline on the service requirement. They will then respond.  Their repair service has been run from overseas call centers.
  • Unit may have been redesigned since the manuals have been printed.  Do a bit of a Google search to check this before assembling your kegerator.  I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to order, install and test before your tailgate party!
  • Some have reported a short life for the compressor costing a heap to fix. Insure it and save money.
  • Others have had problems with the castors which have not been solidly welded and are of poor quality.  But guaranteed for a year so do a spot check after each use and contact the company for longer service life.
  • Temperature needs careful monitoring and must be accurate for correct foam proportion. Some have reported that this is a challenge.
  • Different beers have different types of couplers.  You may not know this and get the wrong one for your preferred beer.
  • Compressors that leak have been reported.
  • Screws are flimsy and mismatched in the restrainer for the C02 tank.  You can work around this if you install it with care.  Also don’t bother to install the restrainer if you are not planning to move the unit or take this with you on your tailgate car park-based party.

TIP: Check all screws and washers periodically to avoid any loosening or the possibility of leaks.
TIP: The product has a 1-year warranty for parts and labor, and 5-year for parts only on the sealed system.  This is quite a short time.  My preference would be to get extra cover and check that there is no sneaky  ‘do not operate while drunk’ clause because, well
TIP: Do not put it in the sun.  The temperature setting is too crucial for that.
TIP: Set temperature a day before adding your keg.
TIP: Set it down on a flat surface.  The castors are brake-less and will roll in a sloped area. If you are not tailgating away from home, just remove the castors altogether.

8. Marvel 60HK Triple Faucet Built-In Outdoor Stainless Kegerator

Marvel 60HK Triple Faucet Built-In Outdoor Kegerator

Marvel 60HK Triple Faucet Built-In Outdoor Kegerator

Now we are going a bit more aspirational, and who doesn’t dream of having one of these on the patio?

The reason I am including this triple faucet built-in model is that it would be ideal to install in your barbecue outdoor kitchen for home tailgate parties.  It will withstand the elements as it has a solid stainless steel cabinet. This bad boy ain’t called ‘Marvel’ for nothing!

Imagine your tailgate party at home when you unveil this monster to your buddies!  Three taps, no waiting for your beer, which can be one of several different brews.  Ah well, I can dream.  But seriously, it would be something that a group of friends could invest in.  Just install it at my place, please.

PROS:

  • THREE taps, yes, three taps.
  • Outdoor Kegerator can be used for built in or freestanding applications
  • Commercial Grade Gauge Co2 Regulator with Air Distributor
  • Holds: 1/2 barrels / Full Size Kegs (15.5gal), 1/4 barrels / Ponies (7.75gal)
  • Stainless Steel Exterior, Stainless Steel Door
  • Includes 3 Ball Lock Homebrew Keg Couplers
  • Domestic and commercial in size and scale.
  • Clear instructions.
  • Range of keg sizes will fit.
  • Solid enough for outdoor installation.
  • Weather proof.

CONS:

  • High end in price.
  • Not in the least portable.
  • Expensive to run and maintain but the more you drink, the more you will save by using large kegs instead of cans and bottles. Let the tailgating begin so that I can save money!
  • Professional installation recommended.

MSRP = $2659.00

OK, so now you have been to the mountain, come back to earth.  The following may be the only one you can afford.   It is not that it doesn’t work, it is more that you need to handle it with care, set it up and use it gently.

9. Koldfront KBC51SS Deluxe Stainless Steel Kegerator and Draft Beer Mini Dispenser

Koldfront KBC51SS Deluxe Stainless Steel Kegerator and Draft Beer Dispenser, Mini

Koldfront Deluxe Stainless Steel Mini Kegerator and Draft Beer Dispenser

Here’s a very lightweight counter-top model and when you read the specs you will see why it is cheap and light.  It looks like a coffee machine but really doesn’t have the guts to service a large tailgate party.  Thin plastic housing.   This is a long way from being of any commercial use and most tailgate parties need something more heavy duty than this little machine that only serves up 5 liter kegs.

PROS:

  • Stylish black and stainless steel unit with LED thermostat control capable of maintaining temperature range of 36F – 50F
  • LED display shows internal temperature of your keg to help you dial in your desired serving temperature
  • Designed for 5L, non-pressurized kegs and includes starter CO2 cartridges and taps
  • Includes squeeze bottle cleaning kit to ensure clean, fresh beer lines (Only including it as this is one of the few that has its own cleaning kit).
  • Dimensions: 17 1/3″ H x 10 2/3″ W x 16 1/3″ D; Weight: 13.7 lbs.

CONS:

  • Some have complained that this has shipped without instruction manuals and the instructions are confusing.
  • Some ‘new’ models were rusty inside suggesting that they were refurbished.
  • Servicing a problem.
  • Noisy fan.
  • Overheats.
  • Leaks.

MSRP                         = $225
Amazon price           = $169

10. Avanti CB350S-IS 1.7-cu.-ft. Portable Party Pub Beer Dispenser

Avanti 1.7-Cubic Foot Beer Dispenser

Avanti 1.7-Cubic Foot Beer Dispenser

This is another entry-level machine, perhaps a notch above some of the others as it is a little bigger.

It does all the same things as other counter top machines – but holds two kegs.

Excellent for tailgating when you have a power source but don’t jiggle it too much en route and make sure to keep it out of the sun.

Compressor cooled.
5 liter kegs.
Compact design.

PROS:

  • Is more rugged than the smaller models.
  • Will allow you to keep a nearly empty keg in the machine – some other smaller ones will die if you do this and you end up wasting beer.
  • Small enough to take tailgating.
  • Seems good value.
  • Can use a range of kegs. Check the packaging for the latest as manufacturers are responding to demand and expanding the range.

CONS:

  • Slow to pour due to narrow tube size.
  • Cheap regulator used.
  • Noisy. Don’t keep it near your home theatre.

MSRP               = $235

Kegerator Accessories

A lot of kegerators will come with everything you need to get it going but there are some accessories that assist with cleaning and protecting your investment.

Kleen-Plug Draft Beer Tap Faucet Cap & Brush

A good faucet will keep your kegerator tap clean and the Kleen Plug ensures that no nasty bugs, sediment or yeast will get inside your beer dispenser. Trust me, it keeps the pure taste of the beer – no one wants dirty beverages! You need one for each tap and it is designed to fit both US and European tap sizes. Dimensions: 2 1/4″L x 7/8″W.

San Jamar Kegerator cleaning plug

San Jamar Kegerator cleaning plug

The Tap Soother- Draft Beer Faucet Cap

You need this to keep the ‘wine flies’ from your keg faucet.  This is basically a cheaper version of the Kleen Plug above so the Tap Soother works great as a good backup and is a very low cost preventative measure. You need a plug to prevent yeast and bacteria build-up inside your draught taps and it also prevents sticking of the faucet while blocking out bugs.

KegWorks The Tap Soother Draft Beer Faucet Cap

Kegerator Cleaning Kit

Cleaning is essential as beer is a yeasty drink and therefore, attracts bacteria, microbes and germs.  Check out this video on how to clean a kegerator properly. If your Kegerator Cleaning Kit comes with instructions, photocopy the instructions, laminate them or place in plastic pocket and hang near the kegerator when you are cleaning it.

Taprite Kegerator Cleaning Kit

Heineken BT06 BeerTender Tubes, Pack of 6
For all kegerators, you need to buy a set of keg dispenser tubes. Each time you put a new keg in the kegerator, you need to change the tube to retain beer freshness and integrity and these are specifically made for beer keg dispensers.  You can’t really chintz out on these items or you will get a blockage of gunk and bacteria and then the machine will not function and you could even vomit.  Ahhhhh, that’s what causes it.
Don’t forget to purchase it with your machine for free shipping! NOTE:  You need to buy the right sized tubes for your particular machine so be sure to check the instruction manual for specifications or send the question to your vendor.

Chalkboard Beer Tap Handle for Kegerator
This is a terrific low cost gadget that allows you to write the name of the brew on the little board and identify which is on today’s tailgate party drinking menu.
Nice way to make your setup look pro!  Can’t find any negatives with this little beauty which slips right on the tap.

SUMMARY
It does come down to budget but the mid-range versions are quite impressive while the small ones are so cheap that it would be worthwhile buying these as gifts for the avid tailgaters in your life.  The Marvel is certainly something to think about when you are re-landscaping and remember the golden rule, with kegs, the more you drink, the more you save!

The Gameday Beverage Gameplan – Best Drinks For The Tailgate Party

Beer – The Staple Tailgate Party Drink

EdgeStar Deluxe Mini Kegerator & Draft Beer Dispenser

EdgeStar Deluxe Mini Kegerator & Draft Beer Dispenser

What was it that Homer said again? Oh, that’s it: “Beer. Beer. Beer. Bed. Bed. Bed.” Truly wise words indeed! But he also forgot to mention the tailgate party! Because, when you start talking tailgating party beer is the first beverage thing that comes to mind.

There are over 20,000 official major brands of beer in the world.  Add to that all the brew pubs and boutique beers and you have world domination right there!

But the most important beer question for the tailgate party is: Keg, cans or bottles?

For a big crowd the keg reigns supreme. A keg will save you money and will add to the fun: you can’t do a keg stand with bottles or cans.

First, choose a size (I know what you’re thinking: ‘the biggest one!’)

You need to figure out how many people are attending the tailgating party in order to choose a size.  An average beer is 12 oz. so here is how many servings you get in the three sizes available.

Local U.S. Keg-Beer Calculation
Keg size x 12-Ounce Servings x 8-Ounce Servings
Sixth barrel “mini” keg (5.16 gal) 55 82
Quarter barrel/Pony keg (7.75 gal) 82 124
Half barrel (15.5 gallons) 165 248

In the USA, imported beer usually comes in 50-liter (13.2-gallon) and 30-liter (7.9-gallon) kegs which often have different names. The best guide is to check the liquid volume figure of these, convert to imperial and apply the rules above.

If you don’t know how to do a Keg Stand, then check out this video over on our Tailgate Party Videos collection. This will clear things up for you. Some say it’s the best way to tell if someone has been to college or not: anyone who doesn’t know what a keg stand is hasn’t been to college.

So where do you get a keg?

The cheapest kegs can be found at your big-box beer and spirits store or your non-club warehouse store.

You will pay a deposit of anywhere between $20 and $90 and this is refundable when you return the keg after your tailgating party or can just transfer over to the new keg for the next game.  Directions on how to use and all the pieces required for operation are included.  The store staff are usually very helpful and will also give you advice on which size is most suitable for your tailgating party.

How do you store and transport the keg to your tailgate party site?

The keg needs to be kept cold (ie. refrigerated) so you need to be sure that your fridge has adequate space.  Many people have a dedicated beer fridge out in the garage and even that may require you to remove some shelves to make the room for a large keg.  Don’t allow it to be shaken around.  Allowing it to warm up will give you a foamy mess of a brew so it is in your interests to keep it cold throughout the tailgating party.  Transport it and stand it in a box of ice for best results and on the day, if it is hot, keep that ice a-coming.  On cold days, you can do without the ice.

Is it worth it?

1/6th keg is around $60 (plus keg deposit). 1/6th s hold about 55 12oz beers, which is a little more expensive than the equivalent in bottles.  You will save on space as bottles use a lot more room in your cooler.  The savings start to stack up after this. Bear in mind that some people prefer light beers, others stouts and different flavors so maybe a keg may not be for those guests.  However, if you are expecting a crowded tailgating party, if you are meeting a number of other friends at the car-park and lining up to dominate the space, then a keg is great.  Remember that the focus is on the game, the activities, the smoked BBQ and the fun, and really, a car-park is probably no place for beer snobbery.  In any case, you can buy all the most popular beers by the keg, so who can argue with that?  Ultimately, there is nothing like a freshly tapped beer rather than a bottle or can, and most people say ‘kegs rule!’.

A keg table?

The beer keg can go on the ground but put a plastic sheet or tray of ice under it to keep it clean.  I don’t bother with a special table when tailgating.  But at home, a kegerator is a terrific investment, especially if you entertain a lot.  Check out our comparisons on the different styles and price points.

Themed Cocktails

There’s so much to do at a tailgating party that realistically, to be making cocktails to order is a stretch unless you have a dedicated bar-server.

Save time by making a jug of one team-themed drink especially for your own tailgating party.  Make it up at home, serve it from its own pitcher (or bottle with a spigot tap) and you can even leave it to your guests to help themselves. For tailgating parties on the go, choose a lightweight bottle, sealed for travel and on a stand to make serving a snap.

Here is my pick:

1.25 Gallon Slimline Beverage Container in Clear by Arrow Plastic Mfg. Co. MSRP  $18.99 but on amazon.com for $12.10

You can fill, say, 4 of these with different beverages, label them and guests can select their favorite.

When you are creating the contents at home, use a funnel for filling it.  For storing it (full) in the fridge, place a container beneath the tap to avoid any drips.  Some people have experienced leaks from the spigot and an easy way to make sure this doesn’t become an issue, remove the spigot, surround it with plumbers’ Teflon tap and replace it in the bottle.  To increase the flow from the tap, loosen the cap at the top of the container.  That’s just science.  You always need to let some air in when you are tapping liquids or it will run slow.

Tailgate Party Themed Cocktails

Tailgate Party Themed Cocktails

Don’t freeze drinks in this container, but you can put small ice blocks in through the top to keep it cold all day during your tailgating party.  Each holds 1.25 gallons which is quite heavy so I never rely on the carrying handle for transporting them.

Again, label your drinks especially if some are non-alcoholic.

Of course, if you want to go top-shelf, invest in a Margaritaville DM900 Battery-Powered Frozen-Concoction Maker.

You can make a pitcher at a time and serve your guests frozen margaritas all day long on a single battery charge with this cordless drink maker.

The manufacturers claim it will mix up to 80 drinks and users say that it will easily do 7 or 8 pitchers full before needing a recharge. That’s enough for the biggest tailgating party!

It’s simple to set up on your drinks table.

Despite being battery operated, it has the grunt to shave ice and blend your favorite recipes for drinks.  It will even make non-alcoholic slushies for your kids when it’s not on tailgating party duty.

It is powered by an 18 volt NiCad battery pack – I would advise buying a second battery pack as a backup to get you through a long party.

The blending jar holds 36 ounces but don’t overfill it as the rules of blenders apply and an overfilled jar can make a huge mess.

It is pretty compact for its power – measuring around 15 x 10 x 21 inches.

Easy to clean.

Invest in a plastic tub to hold it and a few ingredients and accessories. This will protect it from dings.

Non Alcoholic Drinks

For some guests, the best accompaniments for that rack of ribs just might be a soda, a cola drink, root beer or a fruity drink.  Some sugar-free options for the diet conscious.

Just go for variety and keep it all nice and chilled.  Allow two drinks per person minimum and if canned or bottled, you can roll over the leftovers to the next weeks’ games. You can buy in bulk from the big box stores and what I usually do is keep an eye out for specials out of season and store them till its tailgating time.  You can save a lot of money.

A smart fruity punch can add real interest to your party and here’s where you can be creative, making something that somehow blends with your team colors.  You can make a non-alcoholic Sangria for the Trojans, for instance, a Blueberry colored concoction for the Bruins –the possibilities are endless.

Check our site regularly as we will be adding recipes for all kinds of drinks that you can serve at your tailgating party whether in the car-park or at home.

FINALLY

Don’t forget the obvious gear you need for running a bar-on-the-move at your tailgating party: A Can opener; A Sharp knife for cutting up limes (unless you pre-cut them at home); A Bottle opener; A Corkscrew for wine.

Or, even better – here’s a compact, all-in-one gadget that has all these things!

The Bar10DER All In One Home Bartending Tool.

Bar10DER All in One Home Bartending Tool

Don’t forget to grab some ice by the bag to keep the drinks (and food) cool! And, of course, some drinkware for serving (12 oz or 8 oz containers).  You can use disposable or make up a set of team-themed licensed beakers to use all season long. Don’t forget to wash them when you get home and dry before stashing for the next tailgating party!

Tailgate Party Video: How To Do A Keg Stand

What’s that? You’re in college and you don’t know how to do a Keg Stand?!!? Well, lucky for you video jug have put together this informative guide to one of the toughest manoeuvres in the world of college drinking games.

You will need:

  • a tapped keg
  • two spotters
  • a pumper
  • an appetite for beer

The technique:

  • Place your hands on the handles on top of the keg
  • The spotters lift you up by the legs, moving you into a handstand over the keg
  • Drink! Get someone to place the working end of the tap into your mouth then the pumper will pump a steady flow of beer into your mouth while you perform the handstand over the keg.
  • The audience will count the number of seconds you continuously drink before stopping, regurgitating, drowning, passing out, or possibly dying.
  • You can let the spotters know that you are done by shaking your legs and they will let you down.

Remember: a keg holds the equivalent of 165 cans of beer so drink in moderation and don’t waste beer by vomiting!
